Step 1.3 – Business Phone, 411 Directory Listing, and Fax
- Ensure that the business has a dedicated business phone number.
- Ensure that the business has a dedicated business fax number.
- Submit your business phone number to the national 411 directory.
- Verify that your business phone number is properly listed under 411.
The perception lenders, vendors, and creditors have of your business is critical to your ability to build strong business credit. This perception is why we highly recommend that you have a business phone number listed under 411, a dedicated fax number, and even an “800” number. These items are important components of building your business credit asset and boosting the perception of your business.
1) Business Phone Number:
You must have a dedicated business phone number that is listed with 411 directory assistance, under the business name. Do not use your home number. Lenders, vendors, creditors, and even insurance providers will verify that your business is listed with 411. A toll-free number will give your business credibility, but you must have a LOCAL business number for the listing with 411 directory assistance.
Boost Perception With an 800 Number
How do lenders, vendors and customers see you? It’s just too easy and inexpensive to ADD a USA 800 Toll Free Number with voicemail starting at $8.29 per month as one of your business numbers…
Even if you’re a single owner with a home-based business, a toll-free number provides the perception that you are a real business. Some of the advanced features include: multiple extensions, customizable music-on-hold, voicemail, flexible call forwarding options, and more. Plans for toll free numbers, or even virtual numbers for your local area code, start as low as $9.95/month.
Whether you’re applying for financing with a lender or net credit terms with a vendor, providing a cell or home phone number as your main business line could get you “flagged” as an unestablished business that is too high of a risk. This means we DON’T recommend giving a personal cell phone or residential phone as the business phone number (note: you can forward a virtual number to any phone number, see the information in the box above)
2) Business Fax Number:
Many people say that faxing is a thing of the past. That is simply not true when it comes to lenders and credit providers. As a business, you will need a fax number to receive important documents and fax in credit applications.
There are many great services where you do not need a fax machine and all of your faxes are accomplished via the internet. Get All the Features You Need in One All-Inclusive Cloud Phone System.
3) Submitting Your Number to 411 Directory:
*** DO NOT USE CELL PHONE OR RESIDENTIAL ***
You have the option below to select Yes for your business name and phone number to be subitted for listing with the national 411 directory. This is a courtesy service and we cannot guarantee every submission because we are simply passing your information to 411 and then they list the information. Please do not enter a cell phone or home phone number in the field provided. Only enter a business land line or a virtual number (VOIP or local area code numbers from providers like Ring Central, etc.).
Allow up to 2 weeks for your phone number to show as listed. After selecting Yes you’ll need to click the “Save & Continue” button in order for your information to be submitted to 411.
The other option to get your phone number listed is to contact your local phone carrier. Keep in mind that you’ll need to have your phone service with them in order to get a number listed.
4) Verifying Your Business is Listed:
You will need to verify that you are listed under 411. To do this you will: (Dial your area code) -555-1212 and then simply ask for the listing of your exact business legal name. If possible, do not use a cell phone to check your listing! Once you have a business phone or virtual number and fax number proceed to the next section.
Do not proceed until your business phone number is currently listed in the 411 business directory.
